Monument of the last wolf in Beskydy
Wild wolf howling to the moon-drenched region during the full moon night. Pack of wolves, who are following their prey for hundreds of kilometres in the huge and vast forests of Beskydy. Herdsman protecting flock of sheep from wolves. All the similar sceneries and situations with wolves in our country are unfortunately past and history. Even though there are no more herdsman with their flocks and none wild forests anymore, wolves are returning to the wild Beskydy Mountains. Especially to the wilderness, which has lasted till today.
Since the 5th of March 1914, when was the last wolf shot in mountain chain Beskydy, has passed 100 years. However in third millennium wolves are coming back, they usually head more and more to the west. As well as they are slowly inhabiting passes, various valleys and magnificent mountain passes of our mountains. In recent years, wolves have been occasionally appearing in Jeseníky or Šumava. Wolfs movements and their behaviour has been observed by Duha organisation, which consists of scientists and enthusiastics. These people also organize wolf patrols. The Hrčava village is famous for being a witness to this grim stage of wilderness, when wolves were in the Czech lands, as well as in the most place of Europe haunted or caught. This monument is reminding us of the time, when Beskydy as home for wolves were abandoned. This special memorial you will find near the bus station Hrčava, Gavlonka. From this place you will head towards to the Mosty U Jablunkova and after five hundred meters there is a path, which goes from the main road to into the right to the woods. Then you need to follow red tourist mark, which will lead you up to stone memorial. Near the memorial is located a tourist shelter, where you can eat your snack. A perfect option for you is to combine this track with a trip to Trojmezí, because this place is two kilometres away from the centre of Hrčava.
